Here goes my first book for the YA-D2 Challenge. It took me a bit longer to finish and make a review for it but at least now I’m done.
The Enemy, first of the planned six book series by Charlie Higson, is a post-apocalyptic novel that happened a year after a decease of unknown origin spread all over the world that almost killed all grown-ups. Those that did not died turned into something akin to zombies. Kids were left on their own. A community or groups of kids were formed, leaders and fighters arises, conflicts amongst themselves happened as the story unfolds. With grown-ups always on their tail to eat them alive, would they be able to survive?
*Higson can make you attached to the characters then leaves you with a mouth open, asking why effing hell did that character died?
*I like how the book focused more on what is happening to the character rather than to the events. Higson prioritizes what the character think, feels, and do then incorporate it on what is happening.
*There are many unexplained circumstances and events but instead of making the novel weak, it arouses the curiosity of the readers. It would not be viewed as a shortcoming, instead the reader would really be excited to the other installment of the series.
*The way Higson created the kids hierarchy was amazing. Every kids seems to have a role that also follows a pecking order. He merges the characters traits to his/her role on the community making the characters believable.
At the end of the novel, Higson gives us a glimpse on how the grown-ups(zombies) think. Making one of them narrates, it let us in to the world as they see it. I don’t know if it’s a teaser to the second book, The Dead. But it sure makes the reader excited as to what would happen on the next installment of the series. In totality, the novel is a strong introduction for the series. I would definitely recommend it to those readers who are into zombies and action-packed reading. ^_^
